Burhan Wani was born on 19 September 1994 in Dadasar village of Pulwama. Burhan Wani wanted to become a doctor, scoring more than 90% marks in every class since the eighth grade. In 2010, Burhan Wani was severely tortured by the occupying Indian army along with his cousin for refusing to give him cigarettes as a bribe. Fed up with the torture and the constant harassment he suffered from the police, he joined Hizbul Mujahideen at the age of 16.
Burhan Wani influenced a large number of Kashmiri youth through his bold and unique use of social media.
On April 13, 2015, Indian forces brutally tortured and killed Burhan Wani’s brother while he was in custody. Burhan Wani defeated the occupying Indian forces with his immense popularity, military skills and innovative methods in guerrilla warfare. In August 2015, the Modi government announced a reward of Rs 1 million on Burhan Wani’s head. Burhan Wani was martyred by the Indian army in Kokang on July 8, 2016. More than 200,000 Kashmiris attended Burhan Wani’s funeral prayers. Large-scale riots broke out in the Kashmir Valley after Burhan Wani’s martyrdom. Despite a 53-day curfew, more than 100 Kashmiri youth were martyred in violent protests. Burhan Wani is considered a hero to the young Kashmiri generation due to his tireless efforts, fearless and courageous lifestyle and spirit of the freedom movement.
