According to a spokesperson for the Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), heavy rains are likely in most districts of Punjab from today under the seventh spell of monsoon. This series of rains may continue till August 23. The PDMA spokesperson said that there is a possibility of cloudburst in Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiat, Jhelum, Chakwal and Attock, while heavy rain is also likely in Lahore, Sheikhupura, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Wazirabad, Sialkot, Narowal, Sahiwal and Jhang. In addition, rain is also likely in Toba Tek Singh, Nankana Sahib, Chiniot, Faisalabad, Okara, Kasur, Khushab, Sargodha, Bhakkar, Bahawalpur, Mianwali, Bahawalnagar, D.G. Khan, Multan, Muzaffargarh, Khanewal, Lodhran, Rajanpur, Rahim Yar Khan and Layyah.
Orders to arrest bathers in Nala Lai
On the other hand, the PDMA has expressed concern over the flood situation in the Pothohar region due to possible torrential rains and the authorities have directed to arrest bathers in Nala Lai in Rawalpindi and take legal action against them. Meanwhile, in view of the threat of urban flooding due to heavy rains in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, rescue officials have been instructed to remain alert. Rescue workers have been deployed in the vicinity of Nala Lai and in low-lying areas. The authorities have appealed to the public to never let children go near drains and electricity poles, citizens should move to safe places before the flood, do not go under weak and dilapidated roofs during rain and avoid crossing rivers and streams during rain.
Fear of increase in river flow due to rains
According to the DG PDMA, there is a risk of increase in river flow due to rains in the upper areas. Due to the rains, the flow of the Indus, Ravi, Jhelum, Sutlej and Chenab rivers may increase significantly. The DGPDMA said that there is moderate flooding in Kalabagh, Chashma and Taunsa, while there is low flooding in Tarbela. There is low flooding in the Sutlej River at Ganda Singh Wala and Sulemanki.
