The True Post(Web News)The City of Ottawa had planned to extend supervised beach season this year, but a shortage of trained lifeguards has made it impossible.
Dan Chenier, General Manager of Recreation, Culture, and Facility Services, stated that despite additional budget allocations and exploring several solutions, supervised beach operations cannot continue past August 24.
Reason: Lack of Trained Lifeguards
A minimum of 55 to 60 certified lifeguards is required to maintain supervision, but this number is not available. The city had hoped to extend the season until September 1, but early start of classes at French schools and the September long weekend limited lifeguard availability.
Alternative Measures
The city will put up prominent signage to inform the public that beaches will be unsupervised. Pavilion washrooms at Mooney’s, Britannia, and Petrie Island will remain open.
Outdoor Pools Season Extended
Meanwhile, outdoor swimming pools will remain open for longer. General Burns pool, which was closed for several weeks due to unplanned repairs during peak season, will now remain open from September 9 to October 3. Crestview and Glen Cairn pools will also stay open until September 14, with modified hours.
