The True Post (Web News)A terrible earthquake has caused devastation in Nangarhar province, Afghanistan.
The earthquake, which struck at 11:47 p.m. and measured 6.0 on the Richter scale, was centered near the city of Jalalabad and had a depth of just 8 kilometers. The quake killed 20 people and injured more than 100, while dozens of houses were reduced to rubble.
According to the US Geological Survey, another tremor measuring 4.5 in magnitude was felt in Nangarhar just 20 minutes after the earthquake, with a depth of 10 kilometers. After the earthquake, an atmosphere of fear and panic prevailed and people came out of their homes into open fields reciting the Kalima Tayyaba. Taliban officials have expressed fears that the death toll could rise further.
Afghan Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said that the earthquake has caused loss of life and property, but local authorities and the public are immediately participating in relief activities. Relief teams from the central and neighboring provinces have been dispatched to the affected areas. The Afghan government has appealed for immediate cooperation from international organizations and aid organizations. According to officials, many roads have been destroyed due to severe tremors and subsequent landslides, which makes only aerial rescue operations possible.
Tremors felt in Pakistan too
Tremors were also felt in various cities of Pakistan. The earthquake shook several districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab, including Islamabad, Lahore, Murree, Peshawar, Mardan, Chakwal, Taxila and Wah Cantt. According to the Pakistan Seismological Center, the magnitude of the earthquake was 6.0 and the depth was 15 km, with its epicenter in southeastern Afghanistan. Aftershocks of magnitude 4.6 were also recorded in Hangu, Malakand, Swat, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Chitral and Rawalpindi at 12:38 am. The earthquake spread panic among the people and people immediately came out of their homes.
