Dhaka: Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia Passes Away

The True Post (Web News): Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh and head of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Khaleda Zia, has passed away.

She had been ill for a long time and was undergoing treatment at a hospital in the capital Dhaka. According to sources, Khaleda Zia was suffering from various complex diseases, including a liver disorder. She had been admitted to the hospital for a long time and was being treated by a special team of doctors. Her condition was declared critical yesterday. According to Medical Board member Dr. Zia-ul-Haq, she was kept on life support and was undergoing regular dialysis.
Doctors said that if dialysis was stopped, her condition would have worsened, while due to her advancing age and multiple diseases, it was not possible to treat all the problems at once. Khaleda Zia was one of the most important political figures in Bangladesh. She was the country’s Prime Minister from 1991 to 1996 and then from 2001 to 2006. She was the first female Prime Minister of Bangladesh and also had the honor of being the second female Prime Minister in the Muslim world, before her, this honor was held by Pakistan’s martyr Benazir Bhutto.
Khaleda Zia was the wife of former President Zia-ur-Rehman, who played a prominent role in Bangladeshi politics. During her long political career, she faced several cases and political controversies. In 2018, she was convicted in a corruption case and spent some time in jail. Her political competition was with Awami League chief and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was the main axis of Bangladeshi politics for decades. The political tension between the two leaders has had a profound impact on the country’s politics.
It is also worth mentioning that Khaleda Zia’s son and acting chairman of the BNP, Tariq Rahman, recently returned to the country after 17 years. He had moved to the UK in 2008 for medical treatment and other reasons and remained out of the country after serving about a year and a half in prison. Their return comes at a time when preparations are underway for important general elections in Bangladesh. After the news of Khaleda Zia’s death broke, there has been a deep silence and an atmosphere of mourning in the country’s politics, while a series of reactions from political and social circles have also begun.
