The True Post (Web News)The sinkhole that formed in Calgary’s Coach Hill neighbourhood after a major underground water main rupture on 26 May continues to cause disruption for residents nearly two weeks later.
The incident occurred on Coach Hill Road SW when a water pipeline suddenly burst, releasing a large volume of water that flooded the street and caused significant ground damage. A local resident, who witnessed the break, said water surged rapidly and spread across the area within moments.
What initially appeared to be a minor surface issue has since developed into a growing concern. According to resident Karen Lasku, the sinkhole has nearly doubled in size and continues to expand day by day. She warned that further ground collapse could reach the sidewalk, potentially restricting access and movement for residents.
Residents were left without water supply for nearly four days following the incident, although services have since been restored. Despite this, concerns remain high as people fear further ground instability could affect access to homes and the surrounding area.
Lasku added that city officials have warned the cul-de-sac may need to be temporarily closed if ground movement continues. As a result, some residents have started parking their vehicles away from their homes as a precaution.
Other locals have praised repair crews for their ongoing efforts but expressed frustration over the prolonged timeline of the restoration work. They say the longer the situation continues, the greater the uncertainty becomes.
City officials stated that repair work has faced several technical challenges, which slowed progress. They confirmed that additional crews have now been deployed and expect the primary repairs to be completed early this week, followed by backfilling and full road restoration.
Residents also noted that, fortunately, the incident did not occur during the winter season, when repair work would have been significantly more difficult. They are now hoping for a swift resolution so normal life in the area can resume.
