FIFA Investigates Argentina Players Over Political Banner Display After World Cup Semi-Final

FIFA has opened an investigation into Argentina’s national team after two players displayed a political banner referencing the Falkland Islands (Malvinas) following their World Cup semi-final victory over England.

After the match, Argentine defenders Lisandro Martínez and Giovani Lo Celso celebrated with a banner reading, “Malvinas Are Part of Argentina.” The message refers to the long-standing territorial dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the Falkland Islands, known as the Malvinas in Argentina.

Under FIFA regulations, the display of political, ideological, or controversial messages during official competitions is prohibited.

A FIFA spokesperson confirmed that the organization’s disciplinary committee is reviewing the match reports and all relevant circumstances before determining whether disciplinary action is warranted. If the players are found to have violated FIFA rules, they could face financial penalties or other sanctions.

The United Kingdom has described the incident as a serious breach of FIFA regulations and has called for a full investigation. British officials reiterated that the future of the Falkland Islands should be determined by the principle of self-determination and the wishes of the islands’ residents.

Argentina, however, continues to claim sovereignty over the Falkland Islands, while the United Kingdom maintains control of the territory. The dispute has remained a sensitive diplomatic issue for decades.

Argentine President Javier Milei defended the players’ actions as a reflection of public sentiment in Argentina but acknowledged that FIFA could impose a fine under its disciplinary rules.

FIFA has previously fined teams and players for displaying political slogans or banners during international competitions, reinforcing its policy of keeping football free from political messaging.

Argentina is now preparing to face Spain in the FIFA World Cup Final on Sunday, where the team will attempt to defend its world title while the disciplinary investigation remains ongoing.
