Eight climbers have been confirmed dead following a devastating avalanche on Broad Peak, the world’s 12th-highest mountain, while two others remain missing as rescue teams continue search operations in Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan region.
Authorities said the bodies of the deceased climbers have been recovered despite extremely difficult weather conditions that continue to hamper rescue efforts.
Four Victims Identified
Officials confirmed that four of the deceased climbers have been identified, while three bodies have already been transported to Skardu by Pakistan Army helicopters.
The identification process for the remaining victims is ongoing, and authorities expect to expand search operations once weather conditions improve.
Avalanche Struck Between Camp II and Camp III
The tragedy occurred as a team of ten international climbers was making its way from Camp II to Camp III on Broad Peak when a powerful avalanche swept through the climbing route.
All members of the expedition initially lost contact following the avalanche, prompting an immediate large-scale rescue operation involving the Pakistan Army, local authorities, and emergency response teams.
Drone Footage Helps Locate Victims
Rescue teams have been using drones to search the avalanche zone, helping officials locate additional victims buried under snow.
Authorities said two climbers, including Pakistani mountaineer Sohail Sakhi, remain missing. Search operations are continuing whenever weather conditions permit.
Severe Weather Slowing Rescue Efforts
Heavy snowfall, strong winds, and the mountain’s rugged terrain have made rescue operations extremely challenging.
Officials said helicopters and ground rescue teams will continue searching as soon as conditions become safe enough for further operations.
Government Assures Full Support
Gilgit-Baltistan Tourism Minister Nek Nam Karim said every available resource is being used to locate the missing climbers and support rescue efforts.
The Commissioner of Baltistan also assured families that search operations would intensify once weather conditions improve.
The Gilgit-Baltistan government expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and pledged full support to the families of those who lost their lives.
