Canadian police have launched a homicide investigation after the remains of a 12-year-old boy were discovered in a rural area of northern Alberta.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said the case is being investigated by its Major Crimes Unit and appealed to the public for information, video footage or other evidence that could help investigators determine what happened to the child.
Human Remains Discovered
Athabasca RCMP officers were notified shortly before 3:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 6, 2026, that human remains had been discovered in a rural area.
Officers immediately responded to the location and secured the area. The remains were later transported for further examination as investigators worked to establish the child’s identity and determine the circumstances surrounding his death.
Autopsy Reveals Homicide
An autopsy was conducted Friday at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Edmonton.
Following the examination, authorities determined that the child’s death was a homicide. Police have not released details about how the child died and have not announced any arrests or identified a suspect.
Investigators say the case remains in its early stages and officers are continuing to collect evidence and examine all circumstances surrounding the death.
Child Had Not Been Reported Missing
RCMP Cpl. Gina Slie said police had not received a missing-person report for the child before the remains were discovered on August 6.
Police have notified the child’s family of his death. Investigators are now working to establish the child’s movements and determine his last known whereabouts.
Police are also examining how the child ended up in the rural area of northern Alberta and why he had not previously been reported missing.
RCMP Appeals for Dashcam Footage
Police are particularly asking people who were in the area during the overnight hours of August 6 to come forward.
The RCMP is seeking anyone who was near Highway 813, Calling Lake or Range Road 213A between midnight and approximately 4:30 a.m. on August 6, 2026.
Investigators are especially interested in drivers who may have had dashcams operating at the time.
Police believe footage recorded during those hours could potentially provide important evidence about the child’s movements or activities in the area.
Calling Lake Area Under Investigation
Calling Lake is located in northern Alberta, more than 200 kilometres north of Edmonton. The area includes rural and relatively sparsely populated locations where traffic is generally lighter than in urban centres.
Because of this, investigators are asking drivers who travelled through the area that night to review their dashcam recordings for anything unusual.
Even seemingly minor activity captured on video could provide investigators with an important lead.
Major Crimes Unit Leading Investigation
The RCMP Major Crimes Unit is leading the homicide investigation.
Officers are collecting potential evidence from the area, gathering information about the child and his background, and working to establish the circumstances surrounding his death.
Police have not disclosed where the child was last seen, who he may have been with, or the exact location where the remains were found.
Authorities said additional information may be released as the investigation progresses.
No Suspect Identified
Police have not announced an arrest or identified a suspect in connection with the homicide.
Investigators are currently working to determine the circumstances and possible motive behind the death, as well as who may be responsible.
The RCMP has urged the public not to rely on rumours and to follow information released directly by authorities.
