OTTAWA — The immediate tornado threat in Ottawa and surrounding areas eased Monday evening after Environment Canada downgraded a tornado warning to a severe thunderstorm warning, although residents were still urged to remain alert as strong winds, heavy rain and large hail remained possible.
Environment Canada issued a tornado warning for Ottawa shortly before 5:30 p.m. Monday. The warning was downgraded to a severe thunderstorm warning at approximately 5:38 p.m., indicating that the immediate tornado threat had decreased.
The updated warning falls under the yellow level of Canada’s three-tier weather warning system. However, officials continued to advise residents to take precautions because severe weather conditions could still develop quickly.
Tornado Risk Monitored Across Ottawa Region
Meteorologists had been monitoring a powerful thunderstorm system throughout Monday afternoon amid concerns that the storm could produce a tornado.
The storm was moving eastward after passing through areas including Pembroke and Renfrew. Forecasters warned that the system could bring damaging winds, large hail and heavy rainfall.
Weather conditions can change rapidly during severe thunderstorms, prompting officials to advise residents to monitor updated alerts and forecasts.
Residents Urged to Seek Shelter
When the tornado warning was issued, Environment Canada advised people in the affected areas to immediately move to a safe location.
Residents were encouraged to take shelter in a basement, an interior room or another sturdy part of a building, away from windows and exterior walls.
During a severe storm, strong winds can turn trees, branches, roofing materials and other loose objects into dangerous flying debris. Staying away from windows and protecting the head and neck can reduce the risk of injury.
What to Do If No Shelter Is Available
People caught outdoors during a tornado or severe storm should try to reach a sturdy building as quickly as possible.
If no suitable shelter is immediately available, officials advise moving to a low-lying area and protecting the head and neck from flying debris.
Drivers should also avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather and should not attempt to drive through flooded roads or areas affected by fallen trees and debris.

A tornado warning is issued when a tornado has been confirmed or when meteorological conditions indicate that a tornado is highly likely.
