A private jet carrying nine people crashed near a residential area in Florida, killing everyone on board and triggering a major fire close to homes and a busy roadway.
The aircraft, identified as a Learjet 60, crashed in Palm Beach County at approximately 12:50 p.m. local time on Sunday, according to US authorities.
Witness accounts described the jet descending rapidly before striking the ground and bursting into flames. Thick smoke rose from the crash site, while the fire raised concerns that nearby homes could also be affected.
The aircraft came down near a busy road. Although the flames threatened the surrounding area, nearby houses narrowly escaped catching fire.
All Nine People on Board Killed
US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed the fatalities in a statement on social media platform X, describing the incident as a tragic accident. He said all nine people aboard the aircraft had died.
Emergency responders and firefighting crews rushed to the scene shortly after the crash. They worked to extinguish the fire, secure the area and manage the emergency response.
Authorities also closed nearby roads, disrupting traffic around the crash site.
Aircraft Was Travelling from Texas to the Bahamas
Officials said the private jet had departed from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was heading to the Bahamas when it crashed in Palm Beach County before reaching its destination.
The cause of the crash has not yet been established. Authorities have also not released the identities of those killed.
Investigators are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the flight and determine what caused the aircraft to go down.
FAA and Transportation Safety Board to Investigate
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said it would send a team to assist with the investigation.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will lead the investigation, examining the aircraft, available flight records and other evidence to establish the cause of the crash.
Investigators will consider whether a technical malfunction, engine problem, weather conditions or another factor contributed to the accident. However, officials have not confirmed any cause, and conclusions will depend on the findings of the investigation.
Roads Closed and Power Outage Reported Near Crash Site
The crash occurred near Military Trail and 10th Avenue North.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office closed roads in both directions to allow emergency crews to operate and investigators to examine the scene. Motorists were advised to use alternative routes.
Firefighters and other emergency personnel continued working at the site. A local woman also reported that electricity in the surrounding area was interrupted for approximately two hours following the crash.
The incident caused alarm among nearby residents. However, because the aircraft came down some distance from residential homes, nearby properties avoided major damage.
Authorities are continuing their investigation, with further details about the cause of the crash and the identities of the victims still awaited.
