Alberta Imposes Restrictions On Caregivers At Cancer Centres Due To Measles Outbreak

The True Post (Web News) Alberta Health Services (AHS) has temporarily restricted visitors to cancer facilities in light of the measles outbreak in the province.

A photo was taken of an Alberta Health Services sign outside Calgary’s Rocky View General Hospital, which clearly stated that extra precautions were being taken to avoid interference with cancer patient care due to the measles outbreak. The AHS notice said that inpatient and outpatient services were being limited at Calgary’s Arthur J. E. Child Cancer Centre and Edmonton’s Cross Cancer Institute.

The restrictions have also been implemented at the Jack Eddy Cancer Centre in Lethbridge and the Grande Prairie Cancer Centre. According to AHS, the measure is being taken to protect people who pose a higher risk to patients with measles, especially those with weakened immune systems, pregnant women or those under the age of five. During a measles outbreak, visitors will be allowed for suspected or positive measles patients admitted to pediatric and adult hospitals, but this permission will be limited. In addition, requests for compassionate exemptions will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
The news comes as the number of measles cases in Alberta has reached 1,538 as of Friday. These cases have been reported in several locations in northern Alberta and Calgary. If you are experiencing symptoms of measles or have been in an area where measles has been reported, it is recommended that you immediately self-isolate and contact 1-844-944-3434 before going to the hospital.
