The True Post (Web News)The Government of Alberta has announced a major investment of $384 million under Budget 2026 to strengthen skilled workforce training and expand apprenticeship opportunities at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology.
The project includes the development of a new Advanced Skills Centre, which will add around 625,000 square feet to the institution’s main campus. The facility is expected to open in fall 2030 and will be capable of training an additional 5,500 apprentices annually in high-demand sectors.
The centre will bring together 29 training programs under one roof, offering hands-on learning environments designed to simulate real job-site conditions. Training will focus on key industries including construction, transportation, manufacturing, and energy, aiming to directly connect students with employment opportunities.
Danielle Smith said skilled trades provide residents with opportunities to build meaningful careers and contribute to the province’s long-term development. She added that Alberta’s growing population is increasing demand for skilled workers, making this investment essential for future economic needs.
Myles McDougall described the project as one of the largest investments in trades training infrastructure in the province’s history, highlighting its importance in creating more pathways to rewarding careers.
Laura Jo Gunter called the initiative a historic step forward, saying it will allow thousands of additional students each year to receive industry-leading training and become job-ready for future economic opportunities.
Early site preparation is expected to begin in spring 2026, with full construction scheduled to start in 2027.
