Alberta Measles Cases Surge: 31 New Infections Reported, Total Tops 1,400

The True Post (Web News)Alberta’s health authorities have confirmed 31 new cases of measles across the province, pushing the total number of reported infections this year past 1,400. The latest figures mark one of the most significant outbreaks the province has faced in over a decade.

According to Alberta Health Services (AHS), the majority of the new cases have been traced to communities with low vaccination rates, where health officials are now deploying targeted outreach campaigns and mobile immunization units. Most affected regions include parts of Calgary, Edmonton, and several rural areas where misinformation and vaccine hesitancy remain key challenges.

Medical experts warn that the resurgence of measles  a highly contagious disease  poses serious risks, particularly to infants, seniors, and individuals with compromised immune systems. “This is not just a childhood illness   it can lead to severe complications like pneumonia, brain inflammation, and even death,” said Dr. Karen Liu, an infectious disease specialist at the University of Alberta.

The current outbreak has placed additional pressure on hospitals and clinics, some of which have reported a noticeable uptick in patients presenting with high fevers, rashes, and respiratory symptoms associated with the virus.

Health Minister Adrian LaGrange urged the public to remain vigilant and get vaccinated. “Vaccination remains our most effective defense against measles. We are calling on all Albertans, especially those in high-risk zones, to make immunization a priority,” he stated during a press briefing Monday morning.

Alberta follows a two-dose measles vaccination schedule as part of the MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) vaccine, typically administered during early childhood. However, health officials note that thousands of residents remain unvaccinated due to medical exemptions, misinformation, or personal beliefs.

Public health teams are also working closely with schools to identify potential exposure sites and advise on quarantine measures where necessary.

With the case count continuing to rise, AHS has warned of possible restrictions in community events and gatherings if the outbreak is not brought under control in the coming weeks.

The True Post will continue to monitor developments in the outbreak and provide timely updates from Alberta’s health authorities.
