Alberta proposes electoral boundary expansion to improve representation

The True Post (Web News)In Canada’s province of Alberta, a legislative amendment has been introduced to ensure effective representation in the provincial assembly amid continuous population growth. The proposed legislation suggests increasing the number of electoral districts from 89 to 91.

For this purpose, the Legislative Assembly has approved the formation of a special select committee, which will include an independent advisory panel. This panel will review the recommendations presented in the majority report, particularly recommendation five, and propose necessary improvements or adjustments where required.

During its review, the independent advisory panel will divide the province’s electoral boundaries into the proposed 91 constituencies. The process will take into account population distribution, geography, and local needs to ensure fair and equal representation for all citizens.

Justice Minister Mickey Amery stated that fair distribution of electoral districts is essential for the stability of the democratic system. According to him, these amendments reflect the government’s commitment to giving every citizen an effective voice in the legislature.

He further added that with population growth, changes in constituency boundaries have become necessary to maintain balance in representation and avoid any regional disparity.

The advisory panel will also ensure that the new boundary distribution complies with constitutional principles and protects the fundamental rights of citizens. The process aims to strengthen the democratic system and restore public confidence.
