Alberta New Democratic Party (NDP) Leader Naheed Nenshi has announced that he will not seek re-election in his current Edmonton seat during the next provincial election. Instead, he plans to run in a Calgary riding, a move that signals the party’s strategy to strengthen its position in Alberta’s largest city.
In a statement shared on social media, Nenshi said he wants to represent the city where he grew up and spent much of his professional and political career. He emphasized that winning more seats in Calgary is essential if the Alberta NDP hopes to form the next provincial government.
“Calgary will play a decisive role in the next election, and our party must earn the trust of more voters in the city,” Nenshi said, adding that he is committed to building stronger support for the NDP across the region.
However, Nenshi did not reveal which Calgary constituency he intends to contest. Political observers expect the party to announce his riding after completing its candidate selection process.
The announcement comes shortly after four long-serving Alberta NDP MLAs confirmed they will not run in the 2027 provincial election. Among them is Calgary-Buffalo MLA Joe Ceci, whose retirement has fueled speculation about potential candidates for several key Calgary ridings.
Naheed Nenshi entered the Alberta Legislature in June 2025 after winning the Edmonton-Strathcona by-election. The seat became vacant following the resignation of former Alberta Premier and former NDP leader Rachel Notley.
Political analysts believe Nenshi’s decision to move to Calgary reflects the NDP’s broader electoral strategy. While the party has traditionally performed well in Edmonton, gaining additional seats in Calgary is widely viewed as critical to forming government after the next election.
Alberta’s next provincial election is scheduled for October 18, 2027. As the campaign approaches, both the governing United Conservative Party (UCP) and the Alberta NDP are expected to intensify their efforts to secure support in key battleground ridings across the province.
