The True Post (Web News) – In a major breakthrough for cancer patients, Canada’s most advanced CT scanner has been launched in British Columbia . The new scanner has been installed at BC Cancer in Vancouver and uses photon counting technology, which provides more accurate results and reduces radiation exposure to patients.
“BC is once again leading the country in adopting transformative medical technology that helps ensure better health outcomes and save lives,” said Health Minister Josie Osborne. “This first CT scanner in Canada is a major milestone in our 10-year Cancer Action Plan. It provides more accurate diagnostic imaging and reduces radiation, improving people’s lives after cancer and helping them stay healthy.”
Diagnostic imaging is a critical part of a cancer patient’s journey. It provides health teams with the information they need to make an accurate diagnosis and create a personalized treatment plan. The technique provides more detailed information about a patient’s organs and tissues, helping radiologists see even the finest details more clearly.
“This first scanner in Canada is an example of how, through BC’s 10-year Cancer Action Plan, we are improving the patient experience by incorporating cutting-edge technology and helping them live their best lives during and after cancer,” said Kim Chee, BC Cancer’s Executive Vice-President and Chief Medical Officer.
The new scanner at BC Cancer Vancouver will perform more than 14,000 CT scans annually. It replaced a traditional CT scanner that had reached the end of its life after 12 years of service.
“With the support of BC Cancer, the Provincial Medical Imaging Office and the BC Cancer Foundation, we have brought this most powerful scanner to the people of BC. It is the result of our team’s combined efforts,” said Maureen O’Donnell, Executive Vice-President of the Provincial Health Services Authority. The
total cost of the project was $6 million, with $3 million provided by the BC Cancer Foundation and $3 million by the province. The foundation’s support was completed by the Leon Judah Blackmore Foundation. “We are proud to invest in technology that will save lives,” said Sarah Roth, President and CEO of the BC Cancer Foundation.
BC’s 10-year Cancer Action Plan focuses on better ways to prevent, detect and treat cancer. This includes building new cancer centres, adding diagnostic equipment, hiring new doctors and staff, and expanding screening programs.
This new scanner is a boon for BC’s cancer patients. It will not only help with accurate diagnosis, but will also increase patient safety. This initiative by BC Cancer is an important s
