Carney: U.S. Deal Will Mirror Canada’s Best Interests

The True Post (Web News)Prime Minister Mark Carney has assured Canadians that his government will only sign a trade agreement with the United States if it aligns with Canada’s national interests.

Speaking at a press briefing in Ottawa on Monday, Carney emphasized, “We will pursue a deal that works for Canadians not just any deal.” He stated that ongoing discussions with Washington are focused on securing fair terms for Canadian workers and businesses.

“We’re not negotiating out of desperation,” Carney added. “Our priority is a framework that strengthens Canada’s economic sovereignty.”

The Prime Minister reiterated that lessons learned from past agreements will guide the current negotiations, ensuring Canada avoids any structural disadvantages. Officials close to the talks say progress is being made, but final terms have yet to be agreed upon.

Carney, who took office in March 2025, is also expected to brief Parliament later this week on the trade roadmap with the U.S.
