The Secretary-General’s spokesman made the announcement during a press briefing in New York. According to the spokesman, the ongoing rains and floods in the past ten days have caused widespread destruction. So far, more than 400 people have lost their lives while more than 190 have been injured. More than 20,000 people have been displaced due to floods and landslides, who are in urgent need of shelter, medical assistance and cash assistance.
The United Nations has warned that urgent measures are needed to provide clean drinking water, hygiene supplies and, in particular, the protection of women and girls in the affected areas. According to local authorities, a total of 798 people have died and more than 1,000 have been injured as a result of the recent flooding and landslides, a large number of whom are women and children. The spokesperson appealed to the international community to express solidarity with Pakistan and play a practical role in the rehabilitation of the affected population. He said that UN agencies, partner organizations and local authorities are continuing relief activities together so that immediate relief can be provided to the affected families
