First Meeting With Prime Minister Mark Carney Has Been Very Positive, Says Daniel Smith

The True Post (Web News)Alberta Premier Daniel Smith says he had a positive meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney.

It was the first meeting since Carney’s Liberals won Monday’s election, and Smith had warned the prime minister against any actions his new government might take against his province.

Smith says they had a long conversation about the policies and legislation that are holding back Alberta’s energy economy. She says it will take time to address 10 years of resource-hungry legislation and policies, but the meeting was a “positive first step.”

Smith issued a list of demands for the Prime Minister and said he would address them.

These demands include repealing several policies put in place under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, such as Ottawa’s proposed emissions cap, which they say will do nothing but harm Alberta’s oil and gas sector.

Carney’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the meeting.

Smith said the new minority government needs to immediately begin working with the province to “reset the relationship” between Ottawa and Alberta.

Smith’s government proposed legislation this week that would make it easier for citizens to call for a vote to secede from Canada, drawing strong condemnation from indigenous leaders who warn it would violate treaties.
