Thado Dam Overflow in Karachi Sparks Flooding; Motorway Closed and Army Called for Rescue

The True Post (Web News)Heavy monsoon rains in Karachi have caused the Thado Dam to overflow, triggering powerful floodwaters that swept into surrounding areas and disrupted daily life across the city.

According to local authorities, torrents from the overflowing dam reached as far as the M-9 Motorway, forcing a complete closure of both the Karachi-Hyderabad and Hyderabad-Karachi routes. The National Highways and Motorway Police confirmed that rising waters had already reached the highway embankments, submerging large sections of the road.

In response, emergency crews attempted to divert water by dismantling crash barriers along the motorway. Despite these efforts, several nearby residential areas were inundated, with flood levels rising between four to five feet in some locations.

The Sindh Chief Minister directed the Karachi Commissioner to mobilize rescue and relief operations immediately. Teams from Rescue 1122 and the Edhi Foundation were dispatched to evacuate stranded residents, while boats were deployed in severely affected neighborhoods such as Saadi Town, Malir, Sohrab Goth, Machar Colony, Khameeso Goth, and New Karachi.

Eyewitnesses reported vehicles, including rickshaws and vans, being swept away by the strong current, while floodwaters entered homes, sparking panic among residents. Many families rushed to save their belongings and livestock as water levels continued to rise.

The Pakistan Army and Rangers have also been deployed to assist civilian authorities in relief and rescue efforts. Security personnel are working alongside local administration to relocate people to safer areas, pump out water, and restore blocked roads.

Traffic police have diverted Hyderabad-bound traffic towards Model Road, while vehicles traveling from Karachi to Hyderabad were rerouted from the Sabzi Mandi cut to reduce congestion and ensure safety. Citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and to use alternate routes wherever possible.

Authorities have also ordered the closure of educational institutions in flood-affected zones until conditions improve, citing safety risks for students.

Meteorological officials warned that further heavy rainfall could worsen the situation, with fears that additional low-lying neighborhoods may be submerged in the coming days.
