To Prevent Accidents, Mayor Jyoti Gondek Calls For Innovative Measures To Ensure Road Safety

The True Post (Web News)Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek has called for innovative and effective road safety measures to curb the rising number of accidents and deaths in the city. In 2024, 29 people died in traffic accidents in Calgary, including 13 pedestrians, the highest number recorded in the past decade.

Mayor Gondek has proposed the following measures: Using AI to detect dangerous driving and imminent accidents in advance.
Identifying dangerous areas based on collision patterns, speed, road design, and time of day to allow for timely intervention.
Abandoning the current “warrant system” and adopting a “safe systems approach,” as Edmonton has done, which focuses on preventing risks in advance rather than responding after accidents.
Mayor Gondek has also criticized the Alberta provincial government’s ban on the use of photo radar. He said the ban has reduced speed enforcement, which has resulted in an increase in accidents and fatalities.
Calgary is also testing “connected vehicle” technology, under which vehicles and infrastructure (such as traffic signals) exchange information with each other. This technology can help improve road safety and traffic flow. Mayor Gondek’s initiatives are important steps towards making Calgary a safe and modern city, which can serve as an example not only for local residents but also for other cities.
