UK Secretly Relocated 19,000 Afghans, Major Data Leak Exposed After Court Order Lifted

The True Post (Web News) A confidential UK government operation to relocate thousands of Afghan nationals has come to light after the lifting of a secret court order (superinjunction), raising serious questions about transparency and oversight under the former Conservative administration.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer addressed Parliament, revealing that the previous government attempted to bypass both the media and parliamentary scrutiny by keeping the operation hidden. Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, described the situation as a “constitutional crisis.”

The issue traces back to a 2022 incident where a Ministry of Defence official accidentally leaked a spreadsheet containing personal information of around 19,000 Afghan individuals. These individuals had worked alongside British forces in Afghanistan and were seeking relocation to the UK following the Taliban’s return to power.

In response, the government launched a covert resettlement programme to protect those at risk. According to Defence Secretary John Healey, the data breach occurred six months after the Taliban takeover—specifically in February 2022. Since then, the UK has successfully relocated 900 Afghans along with 3,600 family members, with more in the process of being moved.

Prime Minister Starmer reaffirmed his government’s commitment to honouring the promises made to those who supported British troops during the Afghan conflict. He also criticised the former administration, stating that his government inherited a system marked by secret court rulings, large-scale data breaches, and billions in hidden expenditures.
