The True Post (Web News) Big news regarding the African continent, scientists have told you all what is going to happen.
Scientists have said that the African continent will split into two pieces in the next few million years, with an ocean filling the space between them. The reasons for the split of the continent into two parts have long been debated. In the past, scientists believed that Africa’s tectonic plates were moving apart again. However, a recent study conducted at the University of Glasgow suggests that extremely intense volcanic activity within the region is likely fueling the breakup of the land. About 2,900 kilometers below the Earth’s surface, a large volume of hot molten rock is pushing upward against the African region and breaking it apart.
Professor Finn Stuart, from the University of Glasgow and the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre (who led the project), said the research shows that there is a large amount of molten rock material at the core-mantle boundary beneath East Africa. This is separating the plates and lifting the African continent, causing it to be hundreds of metres higher than normal. The East African Rift System (EARS) is the largest active continental rift system on Earth. This system is in the process of separating about 3,500 kilometres of Africa. It should be noted that this type of continental breakup is not unique to Earth. Thanks to this process, there are seven continents on Earth today. Around 240 million years ago, the Earth was just one continent called Pangaea.
