WhatsApp, one of the world’s most widely used messaging platforms, has announced new safety measures aimed at protecting children and younger users online.
The Meta-owned messaging app is introducing new parental control tools designed to give parents greater oversight of certain activities on their children’s WhatsApp accounts while maintaining the privacy of their personal conversations.
The company says the new measures are intended to create a safer, age-appropriate and more controlled WhatsApp experience for younger users and help protect them from online risks and inappropriate content.
New Parental Controls for Parents
Under the new safety features, parents will receive greater control over certain activities associated with their children’s WhatsApp accounts.
One of the key features will allow parents to receive notifications when their child joins a new WhatsApp group or leaves an existing group.
This will give parents a better understanding of the online communities their children are joining without giving them access to private conversations.
Parents Will Not Be Able to Read Private Chats
WhatsApp has emphasized that the new parental controls will not give parents access to their children’s private messages or calls.
Parents will not be able to read messages sent or received by their children or listen to their private calls.
The company says the measures are designed to provide parents with additional safety controls while continuing to respect children’s privacy.
End-to-End Encryption Remains in Place
WhatsApp has also reiterated its commitment to end-to-end encryption.
Children’s private chats, voice messages and calls will continue to receive the same encryption protection as other WhatsApp conversations.
Under WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption system, private communications are protected so that only the intended participants can access the content.
PIN Protection for Parental Settings
The new parental control system will also allow parents to manage certain data preferences and automatic settings associated with their children’s accounts.
A dedicated PIN protection option will help prevent children from changing, disabling or bypassing parental settings without permission.
The PIN will provide an additional layer of protection for settings configured by parents.
Controls for Channels and Meta AI
The new parental tools will also give parents greater control over whether their children can follow or use WhatsApp Channels.
Parents will also be able to manage available settings related to Meta AI, allowing them to decide which AI-related features are appropriate for their children.
The aim is to give families greater control over how younger users interact with AI-powered features on the platform.
Growing Global Pressure to Protect Children Online
WhatsApp’s announcement comes amid growing pressure on major technology and social media companies to strengthen protections for children and teenagers online.
Governments, cybersecurity organizations and child-safety advocates around the world have increasingly called for stronger measures to protect young users from online exploitation, inappropriate content, cyberbullying and other digital risks.
The latest WhatsApp features are part of the broader technology industry effort to provide parents with more tools to manage children’s online experiences.
Global Rollout for Android and iOS
According to WhatsApp, the new parental safety tools will be rolled out gradually to users around the world over the coming weeks.
The features are expected to become available on both Android and iOS devices.
Parents will be able to connect the relevant accounts and use the new controls to help create a safer online environment for their children while maintaining the privacy of their private communications.
