The True Post (Web News)Delta City, the Delta School Board and the provincial government of British Columbia have jointly begun construction of a new track and field at CQM Secondary School. Construction of the new track is expected to begin in the coming weeks.
Mayor George V. Harvey, Councilors Jesse Dosanjh, Jennifer Johl and Delta North MLA Dylan Kruger were present, as were Housing and Municipal Affairs Minister Ravi Kahlon and School Board members Joe Migo, Val Winzer, Aman Dhillon, Nick Kanakos and Nemi Dola.
The project will replace the existing racetrack with a new six-lane artificial track. It will include a new runway and pit for the long jump, structures for throwing events, and a new drainage and irrigation system, as well as fields for American football and soccer. Football goal posts and movable football nets will also be installed.
The new design also includes a hard surface path to facilitate pedestrian access to the school and surrounding residential areas.
82 trees will be cut during construction, but 100 new trees will be planted. Construction of the track is expected to be completed by the end of 2025, with the artificial surface ready in spring 2026. The track will be open from late fall 2025 to spring 2026, but the grass field will be fenced off to allow for new grass to be planted.
The project was made possible by $4 million from the province through the BC Growing Communities Fund.
