The True Post (Web News) The Permanent Court of Arbitration has said that India has no legal right to unilaterally suspend the Indus Waters Treaty, as the treaty does not include any such clause.
The Pakistani government welcomed the decision, calling it a global affirmation of Pakistan’s position and calling India’s actions illegal.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that Pakistan was ready for “meaningful dialogue” with India on all disputes, including Jammu and Kashmir, water, trade and terrorism.
It may be recalled that India had announced the suspension of the treaty after the Pahalgam attack on April 23, 2025, and Pakistan had filed a legal response in the International Court of Arbitration, on which a position was sought on May 16.
The court ruled that India’s unilateral action does not affect the treaty or the jurisdiction of the court, and the treaty can only be terminated or suspended by mutual consent.
According to the Pakistani government, this decision will be helpful for the legal protection of the Indus Waters Treaty and negotiations between the two countries.
