The True Post (Web News) Deep concern has been expressed over the deteriorating situation in the Middle East and Iran’s nuclear program at a key meeting of the Group of Seven (G7) foreign ministers in Canada.
The joint statement issued after the meeting called on Iran to immediately cease all non-essential uranium enrichment activities. The foreign ministers made it clear that Iran cannot be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons. The G7 countries — the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy and Japan — expressed serious concerns about the pace of Iran’s nuclear program and the level of uranium enrichment. The statement stressed that a comprehensive, verifiable and lasting agreement with Iran is essential to protect the region and the world from the threat of nuclear proliferation.
The foreign ministers urged Iran to cooperate fully with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and to implement all its commitments and international agreements. The meeting strongly condemned calls for the arrest and execution of the head of the IAEA in Iran. The G7 foreign ministers called the move an attack on the independence and integrity of international institutions and urged Iran to refrain from provocative statements and actions that could undermine global cooperation.
The G7 summit also discussed the ongoing tensions in the Middle East, especially between Israel and Iran. The foreign ministers reiterated their support for a ceasefire and diplomatic efforts to prevent a potential conflict between Iran and Israel. The statement said that no party should take steps that would further destabilize the region.
The G7 countries stressed that lasting peace in the Middle East can only be achieved through diplomatic and peaceful means. The resumption of negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program was considered a top priority in order to reduce tensions and ensure global security. Iran’s nuclear program has been the focus of attention of the international community for many years. The 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) agreement later stalled after the unilateral withdrawal of the United States. Since then, Iran has taken several important steps, including uranium enrichment, which have raised global concerns.
