The True Post(Web News)Calgary residents are being urged to make sure they are registered to vote in this year’s municipal elections.
The appeal comes after mayoral candidate Brian Theisen expressed concern over the issue, saying the provincial government and city administration had not provided adequate information to the public. According to him, the province recently enacted a new law that now requires every municipality to develop and maintain a permanent register of its voters.
Theisen says the deadline to register to vote is August 26. After that, if someone hasn’t registered, they will be able to register before they vote on polling day. However, he says this process could lead to long lines on election day and inconvenience to the public.
According to Elections Calgary, citizens can check whether they are registered by visiting voterlink.ab.ca, and if necessary, they can also complete their registration by entering their information there.
The statement issued by the city said:
“Every citizen who is eligible to vote will be able to exercise their right, even if their name is not already on the voters’ register. Such voters will have to show their acceptable identification at the polling station and enter their details on a form. After that, their name will be added to the register and they will be able to cast their vote.”
It has also been informed that during September, citizens will receive a guidebook and voter information card by mail, which will provide detailed information so that there are no problems on voting day.
