Alberta Government Invests $15 Million to Advance Modern Passenger Rail Network Plan

The True Post (Web News)The government of Canada’s province of Alberta has announced an investment of $15 million to move forward with planning a modern passenger rail system.

The goal of the project is to better connect major cities, airports, and surrounding areas within the province through improved transportation facilities.

According to the provincial government, a long-term passenger rail master plan has been completed, presenting a comprehensive framework for the future. Under this plan, detailed studies are being conducted on the possibility of directly linking the urban rail systems of Calgary and Edmonton with their respective international airports.

Officials say that preliminary work has already begun. This includes studying different routes and methods to extend Edmonton’s urban rail system to Edmonton International Airport, as well as connecting Calgary’s urban rail network to Calgary International Airport.

The plan identifies routes where expected passenger demand and economic benefits would be highest. Among them is a high-speed rail connection between Edmonton, Red Deer, and Calgary, where the proposal includes the possibility of running more than one train per hour. Similarly, a faster rail service between Calgary and Banff has been proposed, with the idea of trains running approximately every hour.

Under the proposed plan, Calgary International Airport could potentially receive rail service every 20 minutes throughout the day. Similar connections are also proposed for Edmonton International Airport, Airdrie, and St. Albert, aiming to provide residents with convenient, fast, and efficient transportation options.
