The True Post | Canada News: The Canadian government has announced a major improvement to its online passport renewal service by eliminating the daily application limit, making it easier for eligible Canadians to renew their passports without waiting for available submission slots.
The announcement was made by Immigration Minister Lena Diab, who said the change is designed to provide faster and more convenient access to passport renewal services.
Daily Application Cap Eliminated
Previously, the federal government accepted a maximum of 2,000 online passport renewal applications per day, meaning many applicants had to wait for an available slot before submitting their requests.
With the cap now removed, eligible Canadians can begin their online passport renewal application at any time without worrying about daily limits.
Who Is Eligible?
The online renewal service is currently available to Canadian citizens who:
- Are 16 years of age or older.
- Have a passport that will expire within the next six months, or has already expired.
- Are physically present in Canada when submitting the application.
Applicants must upload a digital passport photo taken by a commercial photographer, along with all required supporting documents through the online system.
Expansion Planned for More Canadians
Minister Diab said the government is considering expanding the online renewal service in the future.
Possible additions include:
- Children under the age of 16.
- Canadian citizens living outside Canada.
Officials said the online system will continue to be monitored and improved as more people begin using the service.
Government Says System Is Ready
Responding to concerns about increased demand, the minister said the online platform has been thoroughly tested and is capable of handling a significantly higher number of applications.
She also emphasized that Canadians still have the option of renewing their passports in person or by mail, depending on their needs.
Part of Broader Passport Modernization
The latest change is part of Canada’s ongoing effort to modernize passport services.
Following the end of COVID-19 travel restrictions, passport offices experienced heavy demand, leading to long processing times and significant backlogs.
In response, the government introduced online renewals, application tracking tools, and several digital service improvements.
“30 Days or It’s Free” Policy
Earlier this year, the federal government introduced its “30 Days or It’s Free” passport service guarantee.
While online passport renewals are generally processed within 20 business days, applicants may be eligible for a fee refund if the government fails to meet its published service standards under the policy.
Urgent Passport Requests Still Require In-Person Visits
Officials noted that Canadians who need an urgent passport within 10 business days must still apply in person at designated Service Canada locations.
The removal of the daily application limit is expected to make passport renewals faster, more convenient, and more accessible for Canadians across the country.
