A new controversy has emerged over the use of Taylor Swift’s songs in videos posted by U.S. President Donald Trump’s campaign and the White House. At least two of Swift’s songs were used in videos shared by Trump’s campaign over the past week, with some of the songs later removed from social media posts.
Neither Taylor Swift nor the White House immediately issued an official statement explaining the situation.
Long-Running Tensions Between Trump and Swift
Taylor Swift has not recently made a new public statement about President Donald Trump, but she previously supported Trump’s Democratic opponent, then-Vice President Kamala Harris, during the 2024 presidential election.
Swift also criticized Trump during the 2020 election campaign, when she used social media to express opposition to his presidency.
Following Swift’s support for Harris in 2024, Trump responded by criticizing the singer. He also publicly expressed his dislike of Swift on social media.
Trump Campaign Uses Swift’s Songs
The Trump campaign used two Taylor Swift songs on its TikTok account during the past week.
One video used wording that appeared to reference the titles and lyrics of Swift’s well-known songs while connecting them to Trump.
Another video featured Swift’s new song “I Knew It, I Knew You,” which is associated with Toy Story 5.
The video showed Trump meeting children at the White House, dancing at a UFC event and appearing at a political rally. It also included text portraying Trump as a president who loves the American people and the country.
Swift’s Music Has Been Used Before
This is not the first time songs by Taylor Swift have appeared in content associated with the Trump administration or his political campaign.
In April, the White House shared a video showing the Artemis II mission crew meeting President Trump. The video featured Swift’s song “High Infidelity.”
The post also referenced a well-known line from the song, attracting attention from social media users.
The White House also previously used Swift’s song “The Fate of Ophelia” in a TikTok video. That video included images of the American flag, landmarks and President Trump.
Other Artists Have Also Objected
The use of popular music by the Trump administration has previously drawn objections from several artists.
Sabrina Carpenter, Ariana Grande and other performers have called for their music not to be used in connection with political messages or government campaigns.
Some artists have specifically objected to their songs being paired with political or controversial footage that does not reflect their personal views.
White House Social Media Strategy
The Trump administration has made extensive use of social media as part of its communication strategy. Popular songs have frequently been combined with political videos and messages.
Some of these videos have featured content related to Trump’s immigration policies, U.S. military actions involving Iran and measures targeting political figures.
The White House has previously defended controversial social media posts by suggesting that the administration was aware that the media would give the content significant attention.
Swift’s Political Position Adds to the Controversy
Taylor Swift’s previous political involvement has made the latest dispute particularly sensitive.
In 2024, Swift endorsed Kamala Harris and encouraged her followers to participate in the election.
Trump subsequently criticized Swift on multiple occasions. His comments have helped maintain the public tension between the former president and the pop star.
Because Swift has publicly supported a political opponent of Trump, the use of her music in Trump-related content has attracted additional attention.
Legal Questions Over Music Use
The use of music by major artists in political campaigns has long been a controversial issue in the United States.
Artists have often argued that licensing a song does not necessarily mean they want their music associated with a particular political message, candidate or government policy.
The use of Swift’s songs by Trump’s campaign and the White House, followed by the removal of some of those songs from social media videos, has once again highlighted the debate over music, political messaging and artists’ rights.
For now, Taylor Swift’s representatives have not issued an official statement about the latest controversy. The White House has also not provided a clear explanation for why some of the songs were removed from the videos.
