The True Post (Web News) — Roblox, one of the world’s most popular gaming platforms, has suffered a major financial setback, with the company’s market value falling by approximately C$97.5 billion over the past year.

During the same period, Roblox Corporation’s share price has fallen by around 70 percent. The company’s stock was trading at approximately US$129.63, or C$180.67, a year ago. It has now fallen to US$36.96, or around C$51.51.

Experts say the company’s current challenges may be linked to several factors, including changes in users’ gaming habits, weaker revenue from popular games and Roblox’s efforts to attract older gamers beyond its traditional younger audience.

Revenue Falls Short of Expectations

Roblox shares came under significant pressure last week after the company released financial results showing that revenue had fallen short of previous expectations.

Chief Executive Officer David Baszucki and Chief Financial Officer Naveen Chopra told investors that Roblox has fallen behind its expectations for spending from users, particularly children under the age of 13, this year.

According to company executives, one factor has been changes to the platform’s game recommendation algorithm. Another important factor is that some of the games currently gaining popularity are generating less revenue than the major hit games of the previous year.

More Than 150 Million Daily Users

Launched in 2006, Roblox is more than just a video game. It is a gaming and creative platform where users can play games created by other users and also develop their own games.

The company says the platform now has approximately 151.5 million daily active users, while around 3.5 million game developers are creating games for the platform.

Roblox offers a wide variety of entertainment, including racing games, obstacle-based games, first-person shooters, platform games and board games. Most games are multiplayer experiences in which users can play with or against one another.

Young Users Make Up a Large Share

Roblox has a particularly high proportion of young users.

According to figures released after the company introduced an identity and age verification system this year, 35 percent of verified daily active users are under the age of 13, while 38 percent are between 13 and 17.

This means that more than half of the platform’s verified active users are minors.

Safety Concerns Also Growing

Alongside its financial difficulties, Roblox is facing increasing questions about the online safety of young users.

According to Canadian police, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police’s National Child Exploitation Crime Centre received more than 1,000 reports related to Roblox during 2024 and 2025.

The platform allows users to communicate through text and voice, prompting experts and authorities to call for stronger measures to protect children.

In response to these concerns, Roblox has accelerated efforts to strengthen safety measures, including age and account verification for younger users.

Could Safety Policies Affect Finances?

Queen’s University marketing expert Yulia Nevskaya said it is difficult to identify a single cause behind Roblox’s financial challenges, although safety-related issues could also affect the company’s performance.

She said new age and identity verification requirements could feel intrusive to some users. This could potentially affect user numbers as well as the relationship between game developers and the platform.

Company Remains Confident About the Future

Despite the latest financial results, Roblox management remains optimistic about the company’s long-term prospects.

The company says changes to its recommendation algorithm have improved user retention on the platform.

Roblox has also reported growth in international markets such as Japan and India. According to the company, the popularity of games on the platform has also become more diverse.

Three years ago, the top 10 games accounted for approximately 30 percent of all game time spent on the platform. That share has now fallen to around 20 percent.

Focus Shifts Toward Older Gamers

Roblox is now attempting to expand beyond its traditional base of younger users by attracting older gamers.

Experts say the strategy could benefit the company in the long term. However, Roblox faces the challenge of adapting to changing preferences among existing users while also keeping a new generation interested in the platform.

Aaron Lengel, a game design expert at Cambrian College, said Roblox is nearly two decades old, which is a long time in the gaming industry.

According to Lengel, the company is now dealing with the reality that its early users are growing older and their expectations from games are changing, while attracting a new generation of users may be more difficult than in the past.

Short-Term Loss or Long-Term Strategy?

Cristiano Politowski, a computer science expert at Ontario Tech University, said Roblox’s control over its platform makes it different from other gaming companies.

In his view, the recent decline in the company’s stock price could also be linked to its long-term strategy. He said Roblox is currently making changes whose benefits may not become immediately visible but could make the company stronger in the future.

Roblox is therefore at an important crossroads. The company must maintain its younger user base, attract older gamers, retain game developers, address growing online safety concerns and, at the same time, restore investor confidence.
