The conflict between the United States and Iran has escalated sharply after U.S. forces launched a fresh wave of strikes against targets across southern and southeastern Iran.
According to Iranian officials and state-affiliated media, at least 12 people have been killed and 76 others wounded in the latest attacks. Several locations, including Khuzestan, Sirik, Qeshm Island, Bandar Abbas, Chabahar and other areas, were reportedly hit.
The U.S. military said its latest operations targeted Iranian military infrastructure linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The targets reportedly included air-defense systems, radar installations, maritime assets, mine-laying capabilities and communications facilities.
Seven Killed in Khuzestan
Iranian authorities reported that seven people were killed and eight others injured in U.S. strikes in southwestern Iran’s Khuzestan province.
The reported strikes affected several locations around Ahvaz and Aghajari. Rescue and emergency operations were launched in the affected areas, while security measures were increased following the attacks.
Local authorities also reported damage to buildings and infrastructure in areas affected by the strikes.
Wedding Ceremony Hit Near Sirik
One of the most serious incidents was reported in Kuhestak, Sirik County, in Hormozgan province.
Iranian authorities said a residential house where a wedding celebration was taking place was hit during the U.S. strikes. At least five people were killed, including a child, while reports put the number of wounded at between 63 and 68.
The Iranian Red Crescent said shrapnel struck the residential building during the wedding. Many of those injured were reportedly women and children, and the wounded were taken to hospitals in the nearby city of Minab.
The U.S. military has said its strikes were directed at Iranian military targets. Iranian officials, however, have accused Washington of hitting a civilian residential area.
Multiple Explosions Reported on Qeshm Island
Iranian media reported several explosions near Masan village on Qeshm Island.
More than five explosions were reportedly heard in the area, while additional blasts were reported in the direction of the Strait of Hormuz. The reports caused concern among residents as tensions continued to rise along Iran’s southern coastline.
Explosions Reported in Bandar Abbas
Explosions were also reported in eastern areas of the southern port city of Bandar Abbas.
Iranian media said security forces were deployed in affected areas following the reported attacks. Explosions were also reported in and around other coastal locations, including Jask, Chabahar and Konarak.
Details about damage and casualties from several of these locations remained unclear as authorities continued assessing the situation.
Jiroft Airport Reportedly Targeted
Iranian state television also reported that Jiroft Airport in Kerman province was targeted during the latest wave of U.S. attacks.
The reports described the airport as a civilian facility. Security measures were subsequently tightened around the airport and surrounding areas.
IRGC Facilities Targeted by U.S. Forces
The U.S. military said its operations were aimed at Iranian military capabilities and facilities associated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
U.S. Central Command said the strikes followed what Washington described as attempted attacks by the IRGC against commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and against U.S. service members deployed in the region.
The United States said the latest strikes were intended to reduce Iran’s ability to threaten shipping and American forces in the region.
Iran Vows to Respond
Iranian officials have strongly condemned the U.S. strikes and vowed to respond.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei described the reported attack on the wedding gathering as a serious violation and said Tehran would respond with firmness.
Iranian forces subsequently reported retaliatory attacks against U.S. military assets in the region, including targets in Jordan, Bahrain and Iraq. The escalation has raised concerns that the confrontation could spread further across the Middle East.
Fears of Further Regional Escalation
The latest U.S. strikes mark a major escalation after a period of relative calm between Washington and Tehran.
The renewed fighting has also increased concerns over the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil-shipping routes. The latest exchange of attacks has already affected global energy markets, with oil prices rising amid fears of further disruption to regional shipping.
