Date: October 2, 2026 The True Post (Web News) —A 90-minute election debate among mayoral candidates in Mississauga, Canada, became the centre of attention because of personal attacks and harsh exchanges between the candidates rather than discussions of municipal issues.
Incumbent Mayor Carolyn Parrish and former Mayor Bonnie Crombie openly criticised each other, questioning one another’s character, working style and political abilities.
Harsh Remarks
During the debate, Carolyn Parrish criticised Bonnie Crombie, saying that City Hall staff were frightened by the prospect of her return.
Parrish also used the phrase “blonde bombshell” to describe Crombie, further intensifying the verbal confrontation between the two candidates.
Crombie’s Response
Bonnie Crombie responded strongly to Parrish’s remarks, saying that such behaviour was not unusual for the mayor. She argued that Parrish treated residents with a similarly disrespectful attitude.
Crombie said future debates needed a calmer atmosphere, acknowledging that the situation had become somewhat out of control on both sides during this debate.
Criticism of Personal Attacks
Candidate Alvin Tedjo criticised the ongoing verbal dispute between the two former mayors, saying residents were tired of personal attacks.
According to Tedjo, residents wanted to hear fresh and hopeful ideas for their city’s future. Instead, he said, the current election campaign had seen two former mayors attacking each other both online and in person.
Tedjo’s Criticism
However, Alvin Tedjo also criticised Crombie. He said that when Bonnie Crombie left the mayor’s office to run for the leadership of the Ontario Liberal Party, she had abandoned the residents of Mississauga.
Compared with the heated exchange between Parrish and Crombie, Tedjo’s comments appeared relatively restrained, as the two women directly questioned each other’s character, professional abilities and political performance.
Demerla’s Reaction
Candidate Deepika Damerla later said that, at certain moments, the debate felt as though it had turned into an argument between children.
She described the candidates’ personal attacks on one another as disappointing, adding that personal attacks were not part of her political approach.
Need for Change
According to Damerla, the bitter exchanges during the debate highlighted the need to discuss changes at City Hall.
Alvin Tedjo also said residents wanted clear and hopeful plans for their city’s future rather than old political disputes and personal attacks.
Both Candidates Acknowledge Tensions
Both Carolyn Parrish and Bonnie Crombie acknowledged that the debate had occasionally gone too far. However, each blamed the other for the tension.
Crombie said many statements made during the debate were, in her view, inappropriate and personal in nature.
Calls for a Calmer Atmosphere
Crombie said voices had been raised and emotions had intensified during the debate. She argued that future debates should prevent political disagreements from turning into personal attacks.
She expressed hope that subsequent debates would feature a more balanced and calmer tone.
Tensions During the Election Campaign
The longstanding political rivalry between Parrish and Crombie has become a prominent feature of the Mississauga mayoral election campaign. Their disagreements have repeatedly surfaced in public throughout the campaign.
The latest debate also featured criticism of each other’s past actions and political decisions, with these exchanges often overshadowing discussions of municipal issues.
Municipal Issues Also Discussed
Although personal attacks attracted the most attention during the debate, municipal administration, budgets, taxes, housing and other local issues were also discussed.
The participating candidates presented their respective views on Mississauga’s future. However, the intense verbal exchanges between Parrish and Crombie pushed many of the other topics into the background.
Mayoral Race Continues
The mayoral election campaign in Mississauga is continuing, with candidates presenting their platforms to residents.
The latest debate highlighted the political differences within the race and the growing tensions between the candidates.
