Bill Introduced to Speed Up Approval of Agricultural Products in Canada

The True Post (Web News)Agriculture sector organizations in Canada have welcomed a new private member’s bill aimed at speeding up the approval process for agricultural products.

Bill C-273, introduced by David Backust, would allow Canada to quickly approve new agricultural products based on scientific reviews from countries that have been deemed reliable.

Under the proposed law, a product could be granted provisional approval in Canada within 90 days if it is already approved in at least two trusted countries, such as Australia, the United Kingdom or the European Union. These products include seeds, fertilizers, livestock treatments and pesticides.

Canadian Federation of Agriculture Vice President Jill Weir said the move will make needed resources available to farmers more quickly and promote competitiveness in the agricultural sector.

The bill also clarifies that the Minister of Agriculture will have full authority to immediately revoke the approval of a product if it poses a risk to health or the environment.

Agricultural organizations argue that this law will encourage new innovation and make it easier for farmers to access modern facilities and technology.
