British Columbia,More than 8,000 residents in the city of Kimberley, located in southeastern British Columbia near the Alberta border, have been placed under an evacuation alert as a rapidly spreading wildfire continues to threaten the area.
According to local authorities, the wildfire has expanded to approximately 6 square kilometers, prompting officials to advise residents to remain prepared to leave their homes at short notice if conditions worsen.
Lightning Sparks New Wildfires
Officials say the wildfire was one of several new fires ignited by widespread lightning strikes that occurred across British Columbia over the weekend. Dry weather and challenging terrain have contributed to the rapid spread of the flames.
The Regional District of East Kootenay has urged residents to prepare emergency kits, gather important documents, medications, and essential supplies, and closely monitor official updates.
Mayor Urges Residents to Stay Ready
Acting Mayor Sandra Roberts said emergency officials will provide as much notice as possible before issuing an evacuation order. However, she emphasized that wildfire conditions can change rapidly, meaning residents should be ready to evacuate immediately if required.
Authorities continue to encourage the public to rely only on official emergency information and avoid spreading unverified reports.
More Than 100 Active Wildfires Across British Columbia
The BC Wildfire Service reports that approximately 102 active wildfires are currently burning across the province.
In addition to the Kimberley wildfire, four other major wildfires have been designated as Wildfires of Note, indicating they pose a significant threat to public safety, communities, or critical infrastructure.
Meanwhile, residents in the Boston Bar area of the Fraser Canyon have also been evacuated or placed under evacuation alerts due to nearby wildfire activity.
Firefighters Face Difficult Conditions
Emergency crews say the Kimberley wildfire began in steep mountainous terrain, making direct firefighting operations difficult and hazardous.
Instead of attacking the fire head-on, crews are constructing control lines and using roads, natural barriers, and forest access routes to slow the fire’s spread and protect nearby communities.
