The True Post (Calgary): Hundreds of residents gathered in Calgary to honor the memory of 11-year-old Parker during an emotional community vigil after the autistic child, who went missing last month, was found dead following an extensive two-week search that united thousands of volunteers across the city.

Community Pays Emotional Tribute

The memorial ceremony was held outside Calgary City Hall at Municipal Plaza, where community members, officials, and volunteers came together to remember Parker’s life and support his grieving family. The event included prayers, musical performances, and heartfelt speeches recognizing the extraordinary community response during the search.

Participants lit candles, observed moments of silence, and shared messages of compassion, while a community choir performed songs of remembrance.

Two-Week Search Mobilized Thousands

Parker, an 11-year-old non-verbal child with autism, disappeared from his specialized care facility on July 16. His disappearance prompted one of Calgary’s largest community search efforts, involving Calgary Police Service, trained search-and-rescue teams, and thousands of volunteers.

Despite continuous efforts, authorities confirmed last week that Parker’s remains had been found, bringing a heartbreaking end to the search.

City Leaders Praise Community Unity

Calgary Ward 4 Councillor DJ Kelly told attendees that although the search ended in tragedy, the compassion and dedication shown by thousands of volunteers demonstrated the strength of the Calgary community.

He said the memorial was not only about mourning Parker but also about recognizing how people came together to support one another during an incredibly difficult time.

Police Chief Reflects on Unprecedented Support

Calgary Police Chief Katie McLellan described the public response as unlike anything she had witnessed during her 35-year policing career.

She said Parker’s story touched the hearts of people across the city and showed how communities can unite when families face unimaginable hardship.

Mayor Calls for Greater Support

Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas said the entire city shares the family’s grief and emphasized the importance of providing stronger support systems for children with special needs and their families.

He stressed that every child deserves to feel safe and every family deserves access to the resources they need.

Raising Awareness About Autism

Event organizer Becky Wilmot expressed hope that Parker’s story would encourage greater public awareness about autism and the challenges faced by families caring for children with special needs.

She said improved safety measures, specialized care, and stronger community awareness could help prevent similar tragedies in the future.

A Lasting Legacy

Although Parker’s death has deeply saddened Calgary, many believe the community’s overwhelming response reflects the city’s compassion and resilience. Thousands of volunteers and residents stood together in support of one family, reminding Canadians of the power of kindness during times of tragedy.

Community leaders hope Parker’s legacy will inspire continued efforts to improve protections, services, and public understanding for children with autism and other special needs.
