New Immigration Bill Introduced In Canada, C2 Officials Get More Powers

The True Post(Web News) Federal Minister of Public Safety Gary Anand Sangri has introduced a new law (Strong Borders Act) that promises to strengthen Canada’s borders against organized crime.

Fighting organized crime and drug trafficking, securing the border and introducing more tools to combat financial crimes are three of the main points of Bill C-2. Bill C-2, which is not yet law, allows authorities to cancel, suspend or change immigration documents “in the public interest.” The bill proposes changes to several laws, including the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, the Oceans Act, the Sex Offender Information Registration Act, the Criminal Code and the Canadian Security Intelligence Service Act. Regarding searches, it would also amend the Canada Post Corporation Act to remove obstacles that prevent police from searching mail, where they have the authority to do so, in order to further criminal investigations. The bill also allows Canada Post’s inspection authority to open mail.
To combat money laundering and terrorist financing, new restrictions have been imposed on cash transactions exceeding $10,000 and on the deposit of cash by one person into another’s account. Under the bill, anyone who claims asylum after living in Canada for more than a year will not have their case considered by the Immigration and Refugee Board and will instead face deportation, but will first be offered a risk assessment.
