The Ture Post (Web News) — An Alberta court has temporarily frozen assets worth up to C$8.5 million belonging to prominent Alberta separatist leader Jeffrey Rath and his law firm as part of an ongoing legal dispute involving the Tallcree First Nation.

Justice Michael Marion issued an interim injunction last week, preventing Rath and his law firm from transferring or disposing of the assets until a court hearing scheduled for Wednesday.

The case is part of a broader legal battle between the Tallcree First Nation and its former legal adviser, Jeffrey Rath, over the control and administration of a trust fund established in 2017 that is valued at several million dollars.

According to court documents filed by Tallcree First Nation Chief Rupert Meneen, Rath allegedly received approximately C$6.4 million from the trust in what the First Nation claims were excessive and improper legal fees.

In his ruling, Justice Marion stated that there was sufficient evidence to suggest that, without an immediate court order, there was a real risk that the assets could be transferred or dissipated before the case is resolved. The temporary freeze is intended to preserve the assets until the court can fully examine the claims.

Jeffrey Rath has denied the allegations. In a court response filed in June, he argued that his legal fees were authorized under the terms of the trust agreement, which he says had been approved by a majority of Tallcree First Nation members.

Rath also contended that the trust has faced years of costly litigation as a result of legal actions initiated by the First Nation’s chief, leading to significant additional legal expenses.

The court has not yet ruled on the merits of the allegations, and the dispute remains before the Alberta courts.
