The True Post (Web News) — Former Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan was transferred to a hospital late Thursday night for a medical examination and was subsequently moved back to Adiala Jail on Friday morning.
According to Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, a team of specialist doctors conducted a detailed medical examination of Imran Khan and declared him medically fit. However, the hospital where the examination was conducted has become a point of political and legal debate, as the Supreme Court had ordered a few days earlier that Imran Khan be transferred to Shifa International Hospital.
The information minister said Imran Khan was transferred to a hospital between the night of August 20 and 21 under appropriate security arrangements. He later clarified that the medical examination was conducted at PIMS Hospital, where doctors from Shifa International Hospital were also present.
According to Tarar, the medical team included specialists in ophthalmology, cardiology and general medicine, who carried out a detailed assessment of Imran Khan’s health.
Why Was Imran Khan Taken to PIMS Instead of Shifa International?
Attaullah Tarar said security concerns along the route to Shifa International Hospital and the presence of PTI supporters outside the hospital created a security situation.
According to the government, these circumstances led authorities to arrange Imran Khan’s medical examination at PIMS. The government maintains that doctors from Shifa International Hospital were also present at PIMS to participate in the examination.
This position has become an important part of the wider controversy because Imran Khan’s hospital transfer is no longer simply a medical matter. It is also linked to security concerns, a Supreme Court order and continuing political tensions.
Initial reports had suggested that Imran Khan was being taken to Shifa International Hospital. However, the government later clarified that the medical examination was conducted at PIMS.
Doctors Declared Imran Khan Medically Fit
According to the federal information minister, Imran Khan was examined by qualified specialists, including an ophthalmologist, cardiologist and physician.
His sister, Dr Uzma Khan, was also present during the medical examination and treatment process.
After the examination, doctors did not consider it necessary to keep Imran Khan admitted to the hospital. He was therefore transferred back to Adiala Jail.
Attaullah Tarar said the return to jail was completed at around 5 a.m. on Friday.
The minister also stated that Imran Khan had been provided with medical facilities in the past and that appropriate medical care would be made available whenever required in the future.
Supreme Court Had Ordered Transfer to Shifa International Hospital
The issue has gained greater significance because the Supreme Court had ordered on August 18 that Imran Khan be transferred to Shifa International Hospital.
The court had also allowed his personal physician, Dr Faisal Sultan, and his sister, Dr Uzma Khan, to remain present during his medical examination and treatment.
Initially, the government decided to approach the Supreme Court for a review of the decision. The government subsequently filed a review petition seeking reconsideration of the court’s order.
This background has made the latest hospital transfer more significant than an ordinary medical procedure. While the government argues that security concerns required the examination to be conducted at PIMS, questions have been raised over the manner in which the Supreme Court’s order concerning Shifa International Hospital was implemented.
PTI Claims Court Order Was Not Fully Followed
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leadership rejected the government’s explanation and objected to Imran Khan being taken to PIMS instead of Shifa International Hospital.
PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar said there was no ambiguity in the Supreme Court’s order and described the failure to fully implement it as unfortunate.
Imran Khan’s sister, Dr Uzma Khan, and his personal physician, Dr Faisal Sultan, also expressed concern over the matter on Friday.
They had expected Imran Khan to undergo his examination at Shifa International Hospital but later learned that the examination had already been conducted at PIMS.
Government and PTI Disagree Over Implementation of Court Order
The central disagreement between the government and PTI concerns how the Supreme Court’s order should have been implemented.
The government maintains that the necessary medical specialists were present and that doctors from Shifa International Hospital also participated in the examination at PIMS.
PTI, however, argues that the Supreme Court had specifically named Shifa International Hospital in its order and therefore conducting the examination at another hospital did not constitute full compliance with the court’s directions.
The dispute could potentially lead to further legal proceedings, particularly because the government has already filed a review petition against the Supreme Court’s decision.
PTI has also indicated that it may pursue legal action over what it considers a failure to fully comply with the court order.
Why Has a Medical Issue Become a Political and Legal Dispute?
The original issue was related to Imran Khan’s health and his need for medical assessment. However, the matter has now expanded to include several other questions.
One concerns his medical condition and treatment requirements. Another involves the security concerns raised by the government and prison authorities. A third concerns the Supreme Court’s order and the manner in which it was interpreted and implemented.
As a result, the government’s declaration that Imran Khan is medically fit has not brought the controversy to an end.
The medical examination has been completed and Imran Khan has returned to jail, but the debate over whether the Supreme Court’s order was followed according to its wording and intent remains.
What Happens After Imran Khan’s Return to Adiala Jail?
Imran Khan has now been transferred back to Adiala Jail after undergoing the medical examination.
The government says his health is satisfactory and that medical treatment will be provided again if required.
PTI, meanwhile, is considering legal options and continues to raise concerns about the implementation of the Supreme Court’s order.
The review proceedings before the Supreme Court and the legal positions adopted by both sides in the coming days could determine how the dispute over the hospital transfer develops.
For now, the confirmed position is that Imran Khan underwent a medical examination at PIMS, was declared medically fit by the government, and was transferred back to Adiala Jail early Friday morning.
However, the manner in which he was transferred for medical examination has created a new political and legal dispute, with the government citing security concerns and PTI maintaining that the Supreme Court’s order specifically required his transfer to Shifa International Hospital.
