During the meeting, the opposition alliance and Maulana Fazlur Rehman agreed on a proposal to immediately convene an All-Parties Conference (APC) regarding PTI’s planned protest and decided to contact various political parties.
The meeting was held at the residence of JUI chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman. Those attending included Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, Asad Qaiser, Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri, Maulana Lutfur Rehman, Muhammad Aslam Ghori, Senator Kamran Murtaza and other political leaders.
Consultation on Political Situation
After the meeting, the opposition alliance and Maulana Fazlur Rehman held a joint press conference.
Speaking on the occasion, Maulana Fazlur Rehman said there was a lack of balance in the country’s current political situation and that the government’s attitude toward the opposition also required consideration.
He said details of the talks between the government delegation and the opposition had now become public. According to him, democratic forces believe in negotiations. Although he was not part of those talks, he said he did not disagree with the process of negotiations.
Maulana Fazlur Rehman said flexibility from both sides was necessary to resolve political matters through dialogue. If one side agrees to some issues and the other side agrees on other matters during negotiations, he said, there could be room for improvement in the political situation.
Room for Negotiations
Maulana Fazlur Rehman said the government’s approach had reduced the space for future negotiations. However, he said a proposal had been presented under which an All-Parties Conference could be held.
He said he would consult his party on the matter, while the opposition alliance would also hold consultations at its own level.
He said the country’s various political and public issues needed to be discussed under a broader agenda.
Position on the Long March
Maulana Fazlur Rehman also spoke about PTI’s announcement to come to Islamabad and its planned long march.
He said political parties had organized long marches in the past and that his own party had also held several such marches.
He said that if PTI wanted to come to Islamabad, obstacles should not be placed in its way because protest and political activity are constitutional rights.
Maulana Fazlur Rehman said political matters should be addressed through dialogue rather than confrontation and that an agenda should be developed that could promote moderation in the country’s political environment.
Key Issues to Be Included in Agenda
Maulana Fazlur Rehman said issues such as inflation, the security situation in the region, the Kashmir issue and the release of political prisoners could also be discussed.
According to him, the All-Parties Conference could bring all political forces together to discuss the challenges facing the country.
He said the objective should be to find a way to reduce political tensions and promote moderation in the country’s political environment.
Contact with Different Political Parties
Opposition Leader in the Senate Allama Raja Nasir Abbas said details of the negotiations with the government had also been discussed with Maulana Fazlur Rehman.
He said contacts were being made with various political parties regarding the All-Parties Conference.
According to him, the country’s economic situation was difficult and the public was facing the impact of inflation. In such circumstances, he said, political leadership should sit together and seek solutions to the problems.
Raja Nasir Abbas said that when political figures sit at the negotiating table, they give each other time and demonstrate flexibility, which can help create a way forward.
Emphasis on a Joint Agenda
According to Raja Nasir Abbas, the Constitution itself was drafted by political figures who had differences over various issues, but they found a way forward through mutual consultation.
He said contacts were being made with various political parties, including Jamaat-e-Islami, and they had been asked to present their suggestions and agenda for the All-Parties Conference.
He said that when all political parties sit together, an agenda would be developed through mutual consultation that would include the major issues facing the country.
Salman Akram Raja’s Position
PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja said political forces should not have differences over the country’s fundamental principles.
According to him, efforts had been made to create space for resolving issues through negotiations, and this was not the final attempt. He said opportunities would remain available in the future as well.
He said efforts should continue to reduce political differences and bitterness and that there was a need to heal all wounds.
Salman Akram Raja said that at the All-Parties Conference organized by PTI, the future course would be determined while taking into account the voice of the entire nation.
He said his party was united and described the political struggle it was continuing as a struggle for “real freedom.”
Continuing Political Contacts
The opposition alliance’s meeting with Maulana Fazlur Rehman and the proposal for an All-Parties Conference come at a time when political tensions between the government and opposition remain.
Through contacts with various political parties, efforts are now being made to establish a common forum where broader consultation can take place on political, economic and public issues.
