OTTAWA — Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day and the 150th birth anniversary of the country’s founder, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, were commemorated with special celebrations in Canada’s capital Ottawa.
The event was attended by members of the Pakistani community, diplomatic officials and friends of Pakistan. The Pakistan High Commission in Ottawa, along with Pakistan’s three Consulates General in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver, also launched a series of year-long activities marking Independence Day and the 150th birth anniversary of Quaid-e-Azam.
A flag-hoisting ceremony was held at the Pakistan High Commission in Ottawa, where the national flag was raised. Special messages from the President of Pakistan, the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister were also read out to the participants.
Tribute to Quaid-e-Azam
The ceremony highlighted Pakistan’s independence as well as Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s political struggle, leadership and historic contribution to the creation of Pakistan.
A documentary showcasing different aspects of Quaid-e-Azam’s life, leadership and struggle for the establishment of Pakistan was screened during the event.
A digital photo exhibition featuring important moments from Quaid-e-Azam’s life and major milestones in Pakistan’s history was also organized, giving participants an opportunity to learn more about the country’s history and the founder’s services.
High Commissioner’s Address
Pakistan’s High Commissioner Muhammad Saleem addressed the ceremony and extended Independence Day greetings to Pakistanis while paying tribute to the enduring legacy of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
He said Pakistan remained committed to advancing its founder’s vision of a peaceful, democratic and prosperous country.
The High Commissioner also reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to promoting peace, dialogue, cooperation and mutual respect with countries around the world.
Pakistani Community in Canada
Muhammad Saleem also praised the role of the Pakistani community in Canada, noting that Pakistani Canadians play an important role in strengthening people-to-people ties between Pakistan and Canada.
He highlighted the community’s contributions to various sectors in Canada as well as their continued strong connection with Pakistan.
Strong Participation by Youth
A large number of representatives from the Pakistani community in the Greater Ottawa area and friends of Pakistan attended the event.
The participation of families, particularly young people, added to the enthusiasm of the celebrations.
Participants paid tribute to the sacrifices made by the Pakistani people and armed forces during the country’s establishment and in protecting its national interests.
They also expressed their commitment to passing Quaid-e-Azam’s principles, vision and foresight on to the younger generation during the year marking his 150th birth anniversary.
Renewing the National Commitment
Speakers and participants emphasized that Independence Day is not only an occasion to remember the achievements of the past but also an opportunity to renew the national commitment toward the future.
The principles of faith, unity and discipline, associated with Quaid-e-Azam, were highlighted as important foundations for Pakistan’s development and prosperity.
Participants expressed their determination to help pass these principles on to future generations.
The Ottawa celebration was also described as an important opportunity to strengthen people-to-people relations between Pakistan and Canada while highlighting Pakistani culture and national identity.
The Pakistan High Commission and the country’s consulates in Canada are expected to continue organizing events throughout the year to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
