Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has welcomed Pakistan’s appointment as chair of the Intergovernmental Group of Twenty-Four (G-24), describing it as an important milestone that recognises the country’s growing diplomatic engagement and role in international economic affairs.
The prime minister said the chairmanship would provide Pakistan with an opportunity to play a more influential role in discussions on reforming the global financial system and protecting the economic interests of developing countries.
Shehbaz congratulated Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb and the entire finance ministry team on the achievement, praising their efforts, professional capabilities and diplomatic engagement.
He said Pakistan had secured the responsibility through sustained efforts by the finance minister and his team, who had effectively presented the country’s position at meetings of international financial institutions and various economic forums.
Pakistan’s Role in Representing Developing Economies
The prime minister also praised Pakistan’s active participation in the annual meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
He said the country had made important diplomatic efforts to highlight the economic challenges, financial requirements and legitimate interests of developing nations within the international economic system.
Pakistan’s G-24 chairmanship is expected to provide an opportunity to strengthen cooperation among developing economies, promote shared economic priorities and improve their representation in global financial policy discussions.
Through the forum, Pakistan will be able to work with other developing countries to advocate for a more balanced representation in the decisions and policies of international financial institutions.
Reforming the Global Financial System a Priority
Shehbaz Sharif said reforming the global financial system was particularly important for developing countries.
He noted that developing economies were facing several challenges, including heavy debt burdens, limited financial resources, inflation, investment constraints and the adverse effects of climate change.
In these circumstances, he said, international financial institutions needed to become fairer and more responsive to the requirements of developing economies.
The prime minister expressed hope that Pakistan would use its chairmanship to advance these issues effectively and highlight the collective position of developing countries at the international level.
Focus on Climate Finance and Sustainable Development
The prime minister also identified fair financial support for countries affected by climate change as an important priority.
He said developing nations needed adequate financial resources and international cooperation to address climate-related risks, reduce the impact of natural disasters and achieve sustainable development goals.
Pakistan’s leadership of the G-24 will provide an opportunity to highlight the challenges faced by climate-vulnerable economies at global financial forums.
It will also allow Pakistan to support financial arrangements that provide assistance to countries in need on accessible and equitable terms.
According to the prime minister, creating sustainable development opportunities for emerging economies, supporting reforms to the global financial system and protecting the economic interests of developing countries will be among the key priorities during Pakistan’s chairmanship.
Pakistan’s appointment is expected to strengthen its representation in international economic discussions. The government views the responsibility not only as a diplomatic achievement but also as an opportunity to contribute to addressing the shared economic challenges of developing nations.
