Protests Mount in Alberta Calling for Education Minister Nicolaides’ Resignation

The True Post (Web News)Teachers and parents in Alberta are intensifying pressure on Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides to resign. On Saturday, protesters from Edmonton and Red Deer arrived in Calgary-Bow, Nicolaides’ constituency, as part of a campaign organized by the non-profit group Public Interest Alberta (PIA).

The province-wide strike, ongoing since October 6, has affected around 750,000 students and 51,000 teachers across public, Catholic, and francophone schools. PIA’s Executive Director Bradley Lafortune said the campaign aims to push the minister and premier to return to the negotiating table for a fair settlement.

Teachers like Sandy Kalay and Amrit Rai Nannan highlighted the personal sacrifices involved and criticized the UCP government for not negotiating. Meanwhile, Jenny Yeremiy launched a recall petition against Nicolaides, requiring over 16,000 local signatures within 90 days to succeed. Critics argue the government is imposing unwanted policies, including pension reforms and changes to public services, without proper consultation.
