Israeli Army Firing Near Canadian Delegation Site Unacceptable: Mark Carney

The True Post( Web news)Prime Minister Mark Carney has called the shooting by Israeli forces near a diplomatic delegation, including two Canadians, visiting the West Bank on Wednesday “completely unacceptable.”

The federal government confirmed Wednesday that four members of a Canadian delegation were part of a visit to the city of Jenin when members of the Israeli Defense Forces opened fire near them. Foreign Minister Anita Anand’s office said two of the four were Canadians and two were local personnel.

“We expect a full investigation and we expect a prompt explanation of this incident,” Carney said during a news conference in Ottawa. “This is completely unacceptable, this is one of many things happening in the area that are completely unacceptable.”

Anita Anand had previously said she would summon the Israeli ambassador to convey Canada’s serious concerns.

“It is heartening to know that our team is safe,” Anand wrote after speaking with the Canadian head of mission in Ramallah. “I have instructed my officials to summon the Israeli ambassador to convey Canada’s serious concerns. We expect a full investigation and accountability.

Video of the incident shows members of the delegation being led away by security forces, with gunfire heard behind them. The Israeli military has expressed its condolences for the suffering.

This week, the leaders of Canada, Britain and France warned Israel of tough action if it did not halt its new military operation in Gaza and lift the aid embargo.
