Major Environmental Success in Canada’s Banff Park as Rare Fish Population Returns

The True Post (News Desk) — Efforts to restore a threatened fish species to its historic habitat in Canada’s Banff National Park are showing significant signs of success.

According to Parks Canada, the Westslope Cutthroat Trout has begun reproducing naturally in Hidden Lake near Lake Louise, and its population is now growing without continued human intervention.

Wildlife experts with Parks Canada say the restoration project has been underway for more than a decade. The fish population at Hidden Lake has now reached a stage where it is becoming self-sustaining.

Natural Reproduction Begins

Shelly Humphries, an aquatic specialist with Parks Canada’s Lake Louise, Yoho and Kootenay Field Unit, said Westslope Cutthroat Trout are now naturally spawning in Hidden Lake and producing new fish.

She said this development is a clear sign of the project’s success because the population will no longer need continuous human intervention to survive.

Humphries described the development as extremely encouraging and said experts are now far less concerned that the species could disappear from Hidden Lake.

More Than a Decade of Restoration Work

The restoration project began in 2011.

During the initial phase, Parks Canada attempted to remove non-native Brook Trout from Hidden Lake using natural methods. However, those efforts were unsuccessful.

The agency then adopted a more effective approach. In 2018 and 2019, Parks Canada used the fish-killing chemical rotenone to eliminate the invasive Brook Trout population.

Brook Trout are a non-native species that had gradually occupied habitat historically used by Westslope Cutthroat Trout.

After the invasive fish were removed, Parks Canada began the next phase of restoring the native species.

Restoration Began With Trout Eggs

In 2021, Parks Canada began transferring Westslope Cutthroat Trout eggs into Hidden Lake.

The process continued for four consecutive years as experts monitored the eggs, young fish and population development.

This year, large, fully mature trout were observed in significant numbers for the first time, providing further evidence that the restoration effort is working.

With natural reproduction now underway, hopes for the long-term survival of the population have grown considerably.

Hopes for Expansion Into Nearby Streams

Parks Canada says the success at Hidden Lake does not mean the restoration project is complete.

Experts now want the trout to expand beyond the lake and begin reproducing naturally in nearby streams and other connected waterways.

Humphries said the overall population is currently in good condition, but the next major goal is to determine whether the fish will naturally begin spawning in flowing-water areas.

If successful, this could expand the species’ habitat and help establish a stronger and more stable population in the future.

Historic Habitat Had Dramatically Declined

Westslope Cutthroat Trout were once widely found from the northern parts of Banff National Park to southern Alberta.

However, during the 20th century, increasing recreational fishing and the introduction of non-native fish into lakes and rivers caused the species’ natural habitat to decline sharply.

Non-native species, including Brook Trout, established themselves in areas where Westslope Cutthroat Trout had previously been abundant.

As a result, the native species was eventually restricted to only about 10 percent of its historic aquatic range.

Correcting an Environmental Mistake

Humphries described the current restoration effort as an attempt to correct an environmental mistake made decades ago.

She said that when non-native fish were introduced many years ago, people did not fully understand the serious ecological consequences those actions could have in the future.

According to Humphries, the species is not yet beyond recovery, meaning timely conservation measures can still make a significant difference.

Restoration Projects in Other Areas

Parks Canada has also launched Westslope Cutthroat Trout restoration projects in other parts of Banff National Park.

Work is underway at several locations, including Helen Lake, Cascade Creek, Katherine Lake and Coral Creek, to restore suitable habitat for the species.

The agency is also preparing similar conservation efforts for the threatened Bull Trout.

Benefits for the Wider Ecosystem

Experts say restoring Westslope Cutthroat Trout is important not only for protecting one fish species but also for the wider ecosystem.

A larger population of native fish can benefit birds of prey, bears and other wildlife because trout form an important part of the natural food chain.

The recovery of the species can therefore contribute to restoring ecological balance within the park’s aquatic and surrounding environments.

Commitment to Protecting Threatened Species

Parks Canada says protecting threatened species is one of its important responsibilities.

Humphries said the goal is to ensure that vulnerable species are not simply allowed to disappear and that every reasonable effort is made to protect them.

The beginning of natural reproduction among Westslope Cutthroat Trout at Hidden Lake is being viewed as a major milestone in the long-running restoration project.

Experts will now closely monitor whether the trout expand from Hidden Lake into surrounding streams and establish permanent populations there.

If that next stage is successful, the recovery of this threatened native species in Banff National Park could be placed on an even stronger and more sustainable foundation.
