The True Post (Web News)In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at tackling food insecurity, the Ottawa Mission has launched a modern urban farming project to grow fresh vegetables for the city’s homeless population.
This sustainable effort includes the development of rooftop gardens and community greenhouses equipped with advanced irrigation and organic farming techniques. The project is designed not only to provide nutritious produce to those in need but also to offer training opportunities in urban agriculture and food handling.
Peter Tilley, CEO of the Ottawa Mission, said the program is part of their long-term vision to restore dignity and self-reliance among the city’s most vulnerable residents. “Access to fresh, healthy food should not be a luxury. Through this project, we aim to nourish both the body and the spirit,” he stated.
Volunteers and local partners have already begun planting a variety of vegetables including tomatoes, kale, carrots, and herbs. The initiative is expected to supply thousands of meals per month directly to the Mission’s kitchen, which serves hundreds of people daily.
With food costs soaring and demand for shelter services increasing, this initiative is being hailed as a model for how urban spaces can be used to support those experiencing homelessness in a meaningful and sustainable way.
