Ontario Job Market Faces Major Challenge: Need for 1 Million Graduates

The report estimates particularly high demand in science, technology, engineering and mathematics-related fields. From 2026 to 2035, more than 200,000 workers with university degrees will be needed in STEM fields. This is followed by an estimated 1.5 million new workers in the health sciences sector.
Need for investment in skills
The figures make it clear that the province will need to make major investments in skills and research to strengthen the economy of the future, said Steve Orsini, president of the organization. He said technology industries are changing rapidly and preparation is essential to remain competitive.
University seats
Ontario Tech University registrar Joe Stokes said the estimates are not surprising, as enrolment in STEM programs has increased significantly in the past few years. He said universities are ready to launch new courses and increase seats.
Preparing for the future with new courses
Many universities are planning to introduce new programs in artificial intelligence and aerospace engineering in the coming years. The number of applications for engineering at McMaster University is also continuing to increase.
Major investment from the government
The Ontario government has already announced 40,000 additional seats in high-demand areas. An additional $1.7 billion in funding is being provided for this. The government says this investment will be critical in meeting the province’s future labour market needs.
