New Pesticide Law Approved in Canada to Strengthen Safety Measures

The True Post(Web News) Canada’s Mark Carney government has passed a new law, making major changes to pesticide laws.

The law now gives the federal cabinet the authority to approve the use of pesticides that Health Canada has previously deemed unsafe.
The changes were made under Bill C-30, which was passed by both the House of Commons and the Senate. The enactment of the law will give the government the authority to make major decisions in special circumstances.
According to the new law, the cabinet can approve the use of pesticides if it feels that the country’s economic security or food security is necessary. In addition, these powers can also be used in the event of a major pest or disease attack. In such cases, the use of the pesticide can continue for up to six years.
However, the law does not provide a clear definition of “economic security” and “food security”, which has led to a major controversy.
Environmental and health organizations and scientists from 13 universities have strongly criticized the decision. They say it could seriously harm people’s health and the environment.
The Bloc Québécois, the NDP and the Green Party have also called the government’s move dangerous, saying that the Liberal government is amassing too many powers in its own hands. On the other hand, the government has assured that these powers will be used very thoughtfully.
